It’s just one of those days. The day when what you thought would happen didn’t. The day when the call came, but it was unexpected news. The day when life shifts, ever so slightly, from where you thought it was going.
Shift, shift, shift. It only takes a few of those days before you realize that the direction you are going is several degrees different than where you thought you would be.
When the will of God unfolds in ways that you mis-read, or just completely did not expect. When the next breath comes as a sigh, not of contentment, but of weariness. These are the days when the will of God doesn’t necessarily conflict with our will, it just took an unexpected left turn.
“‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord.” –Isaiah 55:8
Well if that wasn’t the understatement of the year… Ever have those moments with God when you read a passage such as this one from Isaiah and respond, “Yeah! No kidding!” Your reaction comes, not out of anger or confusion, just surprise. And a little wonder at what may happen next.
“When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul.” –Psalm 94:19
And He follows up with passages like that. Endurance comes through grit, through seeing beyond the immediate, and in taking delight in the consolation of the Father. Yes, His promises are great. Yes, His character is perfect. Yet in the time of anxious thoughts, it is His consolation that delights the soul.
Do you delight in the consolation of God? So often we focus on His promises, His will–very rarely do we hear His consolations. And in those consolations is the reality that He knows the struggles we experience, and He knows we need to be consoled.
“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” –Psalm 139:17
When our soul delights in the consolations of the Father, we begin to treasure His thoughts. It is when we feel connected that we feel delight. And when we are linked so tightly with the Father, the value we place on His thoughts is unsurpassed by any other thing, or any other “wisdom” of this world.
But wait, there’s more!
“If I should count the, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.” –Psalm 139:18
His thoughts are above our thoughts. His heart consoles our anxious thoughts. And His thoughts become precious in our sight. As if that weren’t enough, He puts the sprinkles on the already mile-high sundae. “When I awake, I am still with you.” He is there. Every waking moment, and even when we sleep. There is not a moment when He is not with you.
And this, my friends, is how we can endure. He is with us. Every step of the way.
