What is God calling you to do in this life? What is He calling you to do in this moment? We tend to believe that our “callings” in life come in revelations or powerful Paul-on-the-road-to-Damascus moments. But God calls us in every moment of every day.
Your legacy starts in this moment. And in the next moment. And in the next moment. The legacy you leave is not something to cross your fingers and hope happens. All you must do to leave a legacy is to live each moment by the leading of the Father. If you do that one thing, your legacy will be rich and beyond what you can imagine.
“God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.” –I Corinthians 12:18
As I write this (remember: 2007), my grandmother is on her way to heaven. Her days on this earth are coming to a close. And even in these finals days, she is still unintentionally building her legacy.
She spends her days in bed, and just last night some of the family gathered and sang hymns around her bed. Her voice is quiet, yet when she sang, it was stronger than it has been in more than a week. She directed the ‘choir’ of family with her hands. Then she requested a hymn that only she knew. So she sang it. Someone asked her if she would like some Psalms read to her, and she readily said yes. One of her grandchildren recited Psalm 91, which she had learned at Vacation Bible School this summer, and grandma recited right along with her. The grandchild recited some verses out of Isaiah, and though claiming that she just couldn’t remember very well, grandmas said them right along with her. And when grandchild was finished, grandma said, “Now what you really need to do is go back and memorize the two verses before that because those set up the whole passage!”
My grandmother’s calling in this life was to raise her family and to put on “Good News Clubs” (which we now call Vacation Bible School). Her family numbers nine kids, twenty-seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren plus another on the way. All are in Christian homes. My mom has continued grandma’s passion for kids knowing the “Good News” and serves as the day camp director at her church, with some of my cousins coming to help out every summer. And every summer grandma would send more of her “good news” teaching materials for use.
And now, at her bedside, one of her grandchildren recites scripture that she learned at the modern day version of the “Good News Club.”
What is God calling you to do? Where is He calling you to serve? Just as grandma could not have envisioned the impact of her following God’s calling in her life, you cannot begin to imagine what God can do with you. You are living your legacy right now. What legacy are you leaving?
