In my house, recipes are like gold. Growing up was a baking extravaganza, and once a recipe was determined to be A+, there was no need to look further. Photo-copies of mom’s cookbook, her collection of A+ recipes, is a hot commodity, and until each of us kids got one, threats of “accidentally walking away with one” were common phrases.
So imagine the shock when last year mom decided to try a new pumpkin pie recipe. The 30-year standard faced being de-throned at the promise of something better, something with more complex flavor and a deeper feeling of fall. She stepped beyond her normal comfort zone, to purchase a sample-sized bottle of booze for this new recipe.
And boy did it pay off! The standard was dethroned, and a new pie reigns in the family.
The spiritual life can be this way. We have our standard approach. Go to church, participate in a small group study, have a potluck, host a potluck, all under-girded by a personal relationship with God through Jesus. Sounds pretty good. But what if there is more? What if the standard needs a good de-throning? What if God has something deeper, more complex for me? For you?
“Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord…” –Jeremiah 29:12-14 (NKJV)
Just because something has worked for 30 years doesn’t mean it needs to work for the next 30 years. As He leads you to uncharted territory, take the step. You may just find something better than you’ve ever dreamed.
