What do you do…

Getting ready for bed, the thoughts wandered.

What do you do when…

and frankly, they didn’t go much further than that.

It is not that I had no thoughts–in fact, I had thought about it quite a bit over the years.

It is not that I couldn’t finish a sentence–let’s face it, quiet is not my weakness.

What it was….

Well, what it was was my visual mind.

Given a mind that visualizes everything–everything!–from others’ words, to a novelist’s image, to the thoughts of a commentary.  Everything is visual to me.

And on this night, rather than giving me words, God gave me images….

What do you do when…
…your God tells you to sacrifice your only son, Isaac, the son so long awaited.

What do you do when…
…your friend betrays you with a kiss, in a garden, surrounded by those who swore they would follow no matter what.

What do you do when…
…it just doesn’t make rational sense that a stuttering murderer would happen upon a burning bush and the bush tells him he is a leader.

What do you do when…
…the reasonable human being, every reasonable human being, would choose differently.

Every reasonable human being.

What do you do when…
…your choice puts you outside the category of “every reasonable human being”?

And when the question emerged in words, the answer emerged in an image…
…you just keep walking.
