- 1 Kings 22:51-53
- 2 Kings 1:1-18
The king sought wisdom from a god other than the Lord. When the Lord intervened, sending word back that the king would surely die, the king then sent men to seek the man of God who brought the word. Did you notice? Even after the Lord intervened, the king did not go to the Lord. He went instead to someone less than God. First he sought an idol, then he sought a man.
In seeking the man, the king sent three sets of 50 men. The first two sets boldly declared Elijah needed to come down from his hill. And those men were killed. It was only the third set, the third captain and his 50 men, who humbled themselves before Elijah, requesting mercy. It was then that the angel of the Lord gave Elijah permission to descend and speak to the men. The word of the Lord had not changed. The humility of the third captain did achieve a confirmation of the original word, but it did not change the original word. I wonder if the result of the king’s illness would have been different if he had sought the Lord instead of another god first. We do not know. But we do know that humbling ourselves before God after we have already chosen to disobey Him may not change our outcome. The humility will bring some reward, and it may change our outcome, so by all means, choose humility. But first, choose God then you will never need to question whether the results would have been different.
Be intentional in decisions. Be not hasty in seeking guidance. Seek Him now.
