- Isaiah 1:1-6:13
“Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness.” –Isaiah 1:27, ESV
Prophesies can be so challenging, especially when we break them up to read on different days. We can see only the judgment, only the sins of the people, and miss the overall picture being painted. Out of the mouth of a man of God whose name literally means “the salvation of the Lord” comes proclamations of wretched sinfulness. The mighty Jerusalem being compared to Sodom was no small issue.
But the name of the prophet gives us insight into the purposes of prophecy: to call the people of God back to God. The Lord’s compassion and desire for repentance can be brought about in many ways, and one of those ways is to proclaim the things that are wrong.
So as you read Isaiah, and the other prophets later, remember the heart of the One Who called the prophets. The desire always, always is a call to repentance.
