Chronological Bible: September 23, A day for hope…
- Nehemiah 7:73b-10:39
“…’This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.’ For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.” –Nehemiah 8:9, ESV
The people asked for the word to be read in the city square. Men, women, and anyone who could understand gathered to hear the Law. Those reading it even took time to explain it. And the people mourned. For in hearing the Law, they heard of their own sin, their own disobedience. But God took a different view. The people wanted to hear the Law. He knew their grief over their sin. How could He not rejoice that His people had turned back to Him? How could He not call that day holy and command them to feast?
Realize your sin. Grieve for all you have done in disobedience and lack of faith. But realize that God rejoices at your turning back to Him. Do not grieve of your sin as one who has no hope. Move forward as one who has already been forgiven.
