- John 7:1-8:59
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” –John 8:31-32, ESV
Let’s back-trace this one. Freedom comes from truth. Truth comes from being Jesus’ disciple. Being Jesus’ disciple comes from abiding in His word. A toddler expresses “no” without reason, determining to be free from the dictates of a parent. A child yearns for the day the driver’s license is in-hand to be free to drive anywhere. The teenager longs for college and the freedom it provides from structured secondary education. The college student wants to be free from writing papers.
The yearning for freedom seems to start from the earliest age. But the freedom we long for so often misses the point. The freedom our very soul needs comes only from discipling under the knowing care of Jesus. Excavate His teaching; live your life under His direction, and the freedom you so desperately desire will be yours.
