My Pastry is Ugly, but Tasty…

There is a song whose lyrics I only kinda, sorta know, though I am unsure if they are correct.  Something about someone or something lying over the ocean.  However, with said tune in my head, I sing over my pie crust:

My pastry is ugly, but tasty

The butter and stuff are so good

My pastry is ugly, but tasty

So move on and just eat the food.

The move on is self-directed.  I have baked for decades, DECADES, and still, my pastry is ugly.  I have yet to ever once be able to pick it up off the counter after rolling it out.  Not once.  Instead, I take a butter knife, cut it into strips, then a metal pancake flipper to gently move it in sections off the counter and into whatever baking dish is needed.

It is messy.  It is frustrating.  But I gave up perfection years ago.  In the limited control I have over the pastry–because it has a mind of it’s own–i try to make the chunks look planned, but even that fails.  Rustic would be gracious.

But here is the kicker: I understand it more now than ever before, and yet, it still eludes me.  I can mess with the flours, the fats, the liquids, and it will still turn out.  What I cannot do is make it off the counter all in one piece.

Such is a life in faith.  While we distract ourselves trying to get it perfect, God is relishing the beautiful result of our following.  While we beat ourselves up that we didn’t get it right–again–He smells the sweet aroma of the baking–the trying, the genuine effort, and that there was fruit.

Yes, He longs for us to continually to grow.  But He also longs for us to sit with Him and feast–though it may not be pretty, it is still tasty.

Stop apologizing. (ooh, see those fingers pointing at me?  Yeah, me too.)  Do what is before you, rejoice in the strength He gives you, and relish in His delight in you.

“He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He delighted in me.” –Psalm 18:19, NKJV

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the Lord upholds him with His hand.” –Psalm 37:23-24, NKJV

Relax and enjoy.  Your work may not be perfect, but God adores you anyway.

A Little Leaky…

Space restraints in my kitchen require a bit of creative storage.  As such, I stash my pots and pans under the sink.  Imagine my surprise when I pull out a tipsy-turvy stack to find a small amount of mystery water in them.  The tell-tale trail of gross water dripping from the pipe above preceded some internet searching about how to fix a leak.

What I found surprised me more.
